MEET MARITA CHENG: YOUNG ROBOTICS ENTREPRENEUR FEATURED AT 2017 TOKYO SUMMIT<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6769\" src=\"https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2.jpg\" alt=\"2\" width=\"370\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2.jpg 650w, https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/>\u201cDo you know what it\u2019s like not to be able to hug someone or to be able to hold a toothbrush or to pick up a fork to eat your meal comfortably?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s a question that led a remarkable young Australian inventor and entrepreneur <strong><em>Marita Cheng, Founder and CEO of 2Mar Robotics<\/em><\/strong>, to create a robotic arm that enables disabled people to have a more normal use of an artificial limb.\u00a0 Her company also developed a telepresence robot, which allows children with cancer to \u2018attend\u2019 school even while confined to a hospital bed.<\/p>\n<p>Cheng and her partners at 2Mar Robotics invented the robotic arm to benefit people with quadriplegia, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy and other conditions by allowing them to perform tasks such as opening doors, turning on switches, pouring drinks, taking medicine or drawing pictures, among other uses.\u00a0 For Cheng, engineering is about creating products that help people cope with life\u2019s difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to growing this company, Cheng is also an advocate for women in technology.\u00a0 Noticing the low number of women in her engineering classes, she gathered her fellow engineering students and started going to schools to teach girls robotics as a way of encouraging them to enter engineering.\u00a0 She created <strong><em>Robogals<\/em><\/strong>, which she has expanded throughout and outside Australia, reaching over 55,000 girls from 11 countries.\u00a0 <strong><em>Marita is both a commercial and social entrepreneur, whose pluck and creativity will be shared at the Global Summit of Women in Tokyo, May 11-13<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Join Cheng and other inspiring women at the 2017 Global Summit of Women in Tokyo. Registration is open at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globewomen.org\/globalsummit\">www.globewomen.org\/globalsummit<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><em><strong>III.\u00a0CEOs\u00a0VALUE TECHNOLOGY OVER PEOPLE, STUDY FINDS<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n<p><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15019 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/pexels-photo-261622-300x199.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/pexels-photo-261622-300x199.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/pexels-photo-261622-768x510.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/pexels-photo-261622-1024x680.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>A recent global study of 800 CEOs leading multinational corporations conducted by Korn Ferry reveals a startling lack of focus on the value of people in their companies, while putting a higher value of technology <\/em><em>and tangible assets as priorities in their strategy for future growth.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Key findings of the survey include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a063% say that in five years, technology will be the firm\u2019s greatest source of competitive advantage;<\/li>\n<li>\u00a067% say that technology will create greater value in the future than people will; and<\/li>\n<li>\u00a044% say that robotics, automation and artificial intelligence will make people \u201clargely irrelevant\u201d in the future of work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Recruiting, growing and retaining talent was not listed in the top five assets in the organization five years from now.\u00a0 Technology, Research and Development, Product or Service, Brand, and Real Estate were all more highly valued than human capital.\u00a0 (\u201cKorn Ferry Global Study: <em>Majority of CEOs See More Value in Technology Than her Workforce,<\/em>\u201d Nov 17, 2016.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is disheartening\u00a0 that while many women are still fighting to be a part of a gender-diverse workforce, human capital is not recognized as a part of corporate leaders\u2019 business strategy for future growth,\u201d states Irene Natividad, President of GlobeWomen Research and Education Institute.\u00a0 She adds, \u201ctechnology happens because of people who invent and innovate, as well as those who see the connection between these tools and bettering people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><em><strong>IV. NUMBER OF WOMEN HEADS OF STATE DECLINING<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n<p>With the tenures of several women Presidents and Prime Ministers ending in 2016, such as Jamaica\u2019s Portia Simpson Miller, Kosovo&#8217;s Atifete Jahjaga, the Central African Republic\u2019s Catherine Samba Panza, and the removal of Brazil\u2019s Dilma Rousseff, <strong><em>the number of women Presidents and Prime Ministers among the 193 Member Nations of the U.N. now stands at 17 (9%), the lowest total in over a decade.\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6771\" src=\"https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/4.jpg\" alt=\"4\" width=\"979\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/4.jpg 979w, https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/4-300x76.jpg 300w, https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/4-768x195.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 979px) 100vw, 979px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Throughout most of the past decade, 20 to 22 women held the top government positions at any one time.\u00a0 The loss of U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in the 2016 elections as well as the current turmoil in South Korea concerning President Park Gyun-Hye threaten to bring a further decrease to the decimated numbers.
