WOMEN ON BOARDS: ARE QUOTAS THE ANSWER?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>At a Global Summit of Women side event to the UN Commission on the Status of Women meetings in New York last week, four women government leaders from countries with initiatives to increase the number of women on corporate boards shared their answer to the question: \u201cAre Quotas the Answer?\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17081\" src=\"https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/News3222.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"908\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/News3222.png 908w, https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/News3222-300x106.png 300w, https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/News3222-768x271.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 908px) 100vw, 908px\" \/><br \/>\nPresident of the Global Summit of Women Irene Natividad opened the event &#8212; hosted by Paul Hastings LLP for an audience of 90 corporate directors, executives, entrepreneurs, and government officials &#8212; by presenting a global overview of the status of women on boards.\u00a0 Ms. Natividad indicated that countries with the sharpest increases in percentage of women board directors have done so largely through legislative initiatives \u2013 quotas.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Norway\u2019s Minister for Equality and Children Linda Hofstad Helleland<\/em><\/strong> shared the Norwegian experience of companies reaching the quota of 40% women board directors while still striving to increase the number of women CEOs.\u00a0 Bringing the perspective of a country increasing the number of women on government boards and commissions through a quota was <strong><em>Australia\u2019s Minister for Revenue and Minister for Women Kelly O\u2019Dwyer<\/em><\/strong>, who underscored the government\u2019s insistence that all lists of possible appointees include women.\u00a0 She also shared the country\u2019s \u2018Male Champions of Change\u2019 effort created by the prior Human Rights Commissioner in increasing numbers of women in the boardroom.<\/p>\n<p>From Asia, the <strong><em>Deputy Secretary-General in Malaysia\u2019s Ministry for Women, Family, and Community Development Dr. Waitchalla R.R.V. Suppiah<\/em><\/strong> shared her Prime Minister\u2019s persuasive role in setting a target for companies to reach 30% women directors.\u00a0 Closing the panel was <strong><em>Italy\u2019s Deputy Minister for Economic Development Teresa Bellanova<\/em><\/strong> who forcefully demonstrated the effect of the Italian legislative quota in not only increasing the number of women board directors, but also in improving board director recruitment in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing the conversation of the effect of women serving on corporate boards, a session at the 2018 Global Summit of Women in Sydney will focus on \u201cShifting the Dial on Boards, Management, and Markets.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 <strong><em>To see more topics to be explored at the 2018 Summit program , <a href=\"https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/2018-Updated-Schedule.jpg\">click here<\/a><\/em><\/strong> .<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000080;\"><strong>III.\u00a0 STEREOTYPES IN RECOGNIZING WOMEN&#8217;S LEADERSHIP<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-17084 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/New-try-2-251x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/New-try-2-251x300.jpg 251w, https:\/\/globewomen.org\/globalsummit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/New-try-2.jpg 341w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/>A recent study in the <em>Academy of Management Journal<\/em> confirms what many women have long suspected: <strong><em>getting noticed as a leader in the workplace is more difficult for women than for men.\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong>First, when asked to draw what a leader looks like, women and men inevitably draw a picture of man. \u00a0Second, how might holding these assumptions about gender affect people\u2019s abilities to recognize emerging leadership?<\/p>\n<p>To address the question, the authors of the study conducted an experiment focused on a particular act associated with leadership \u2013 speaking up with ideas to move a team or company forward.\u00a0 <strong><em>When a male speaker presented change-oriented ideas, they were far more likely to be identified as leaders than female speakers. <\/em><\/strong>\u00a0When female speakers shared their ideas, they were not recognized as leaders even though their statements were exactly the same as those presented by male speakers.\u00a0 The researchers concluded that since people do not envision women as leaders, they fail to recognize women as leaders even when they act like one.\u00a0 (\u201cDraw a Leader.
